This is the 2nd book that my 3 year old daughter, Sophie, has learned to “read” by herself. We have read this book every night for weeks now, if not over a month. She loves it because of the pretty pictures, the use of color words, and the textures.

The blurb on the back of this board book reads: “You must NEVER look for a chameleon… except in this book! Chameleon is great at hiding! Can you find him in the green jungle and on a yellow beach? Join the fun by searching each page and touching the bumpy chameleon… if you dare!”

Any book that cultivates my daughter’s love of reading and learning is a win.. in my book… pun intended haha. I love how the color identifying words in this book are in the appropriate color. (Example: The word green is in green ink.) This helps to teach kids to correlate the color with the word. Anytime a book can give a young reader a clue, it fosters confidence and encourages them to continue to read. The colors of this book are very vivid, but not too distracting.

In addition to the sing-song storyline, each part has an extra prompt such as on the first page, “Can you find my green hat?” Says the snake. Although it is suggested that this book is for 3 years and up, I believe a younger child would enjoy it.

Another aspect of this book that I enjoy is that it has parts of the pages textured where the chameleon is hiding. But, for the rest of the page, it is smooth like normal. In my opinion, this can encourage tactile sensory exposure, without the risk of being overwhelming.

The final page of this book may be my favorite part. It talks about finding a chameleon who wants to make a friend at the end of the rainbow, suggesting to me that friends are like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow- a true treasure.

This book is illustrated by Stuart Lynch and published by Make Believe Ideas, Ltd.

The “Parental Guidance” Section indicates this book “helps teach colors and promotes enjoyment of books. Intended for 3+ years.”
