Sophie’s Library Introduction

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” -Sir Richard Steele

I can’t remember the first time I read a whole book by myself, but I vividly remember my mom reading with me frequently. I remember devouring as many books as I could in kindergarten. While I’m sure there had to be frustration when learning to read, I don’t remember it. All I remember is the joy it gave me. That joy has lasted throughout my life.

As a teen, it was a common occurrence to find my face glued to a book at any given chance. Even as a busy solo parent/business owner, I squeeze as much reading time as I can into each week. Obviously as an adult, life gets in the way of hobbies much easier than it did as a kid. Over the years my reading time has lessened, but never fully went away.

As some of you may know, my husband died a little over 2 years ago. Unsurprisingly, life became much harder when he took his final breath. I have tried some coping strategies, including therapy (which helped tremendously and I highly recommend), but what gets me through the hardest times is reading. Just like my taste in music, my reading preferences vary. I love anything from a suspense to young adult to (non-over-the-top-mushy) adult romance.

When my now 3 year old daughter Sophie began to take a personal interest in reading, I was thrilled! We read at least 1-3 books every night before she goes to sleep. I’m not sure my heart ever could get more full than it did the first time she “read” a book by herself the first time!

I have had a thought for a very long time to offer some sort of literacy program, and now I am happy to bring you “Sophie’s Library.” I will be creating some blog posts about books Sophie or I have read and enjoyed. These blog posts may contain affiliate links, so that you can purchase the books for your own family.

I typically only get to read once I put Sophie to bed, which means that I can’t read by light, so I purchased the Kindle: Unlimited subscription from Amazon. I use the app on my phone or tablet, and I don’t pay for books! Considering it takes 1-2 days for me to read a book, it is quite the savings!

Tell me, what is your favorite way to read- paper or digital?
