“I pull back the blanket to take another peek at my beautiful baby boy. My heart flatlines. He isn’t there. ‘Where is he?’ I cry, my whole body trembling. But my husband just shakes his head. ‘Darling…we don’t have a baby.’ What is he talking about? I blink rapidly, my breathing ragged. I think he expects me to agree. But I know that my son is real. I can feel his weight in my arms. And I will stop at nothing to get him back…”
The Homemaker begins in a coveted neighborhood with a seemingly helpful community. But the longer Oliver and Jenna Milligan live there, the more neighborhood secrets come to light. While everyone seems nice on the surface, someone is plotting her revenge.
This book definitely fed on the mama bear part of me. It shows just how strong a mother’s intuition really is, while also hinting at a fear that our perception of reality isn’t true. Jenna thinks she remembers holding her newborn son River, hearing his first cries. But how could that be? Her own husband is telling her that her son, their son, was stillborn. Her quest to find the answers and then seek justice shows how far a mother will go for her children, even when the ones she is closest to are telling a different story.
Some parts of the book are a little unbelievable, but it’s fiction so I can overlook that. It was well written, and kept my attention easily.
